HOW TO RUIN YOUR CAREER IN EASY STEPS

Know what’s expected.

No one wants a drone or a yes-man, but if you don’t understand the corporate culture and if you don’t know what’s expected of you, you’re gone. It’s possible to fit in without squashing your creativity. Remember whom you work for and why.

Money isn’t everything.

Don’t create the impression that you’re working just for a paycheck. That’s the hallmark of a clock-puncher and will kill all chances for advancement. If you’re so unhappy with your job that you live for the 15th and 30th of each month, it’s time to start sending out résumés.

supermarket tabloids.

Idle chit-chat at the water cooler is a fact of life and acceptable, and is even expected in small doses. But don’t chatter endlessly about who’s in and who’s out. To do so reflects badly on you and takes time away from turning the wheels. Your boss will notice if you spend more time yapping than working.

Flubbing deadlines.

Deadlines are real and must be met because, believe it or not, the world doesn’t move to your beat. Missing deadlines will back up the whole show and make your boss look bad. A bad hair day is no excuse for missing a deadline. Work late to get the job done if you have to.

Cubicle etiquette counts.

Leave it to future historians to determine how cubicle culture changed America. All you have to do is live with it. Remember: Privacy’s nonexistent in a cubicle, so don’t have phone conversations that you don’t want others to hear. Personal decorative touches should be tasteful.

Personal e-mails are death.

Here’s a basic truth many employees miss: The company e-mail system is for company business. Don’t use it to gossip, and don’t write anything that you don’t want read by the boss, because many systems save deleted messages to a master file. Horror tales of someone hitting "Reply to All" and mistakenly sending a juicy note about the boss to everyone, including the chief, are common. Call up your personal e-mail account to send personal notes, and keep it short; you’re at work.

vulnerable.

You don’t have to constantly hang out with co-workers after hours, but don’t isolate yourself with standoffish behavior. You don’t want to be seen as someone who thinks you’re too good for the proletariat. Extend the simple courtesies to your co-workers: good morning, good night, please, thanks. Your mother was right: Manners count.

Don’t climb ego mountain.

No one likes an egomaniac, and for good reason: They’re boring, obnoxious, trivial people. Listen to what your co-workers tell you. Ask questions. Learn from the experienced hands. Improve your skills and boost your productivity.

Don’t take credit for others’ work.

It’s a familiar tale: The office go-getter takes credit for other people’s work. Such people overlook a basic point: It’s dishonest. If you do this, word will eventually reach the boss, and your standing will crumble instantly. Along the way, the long knives will be out, and your co-workers will root for, and cheer, your demise. Some may even knife your aspirations

Office romance invites catastrophe.

We all work long hours, and sometimes work becomes our social life, leading to romantic entanglements. This is fine if you get married and live happily ever after. What are the chances of that? Think: What will you do if the relationship ends badly? Never become involved with your boss. Your accomplishments and promotions will become suspect, and one of you will have to move to another department, and perhaps another job, when the romance becomes known.

Helpful hint: Look outside the office for the sweetie of your dreams.

learning through experience..

When I entered the office today, the michelle, staff located near the entrance stared at me like she has never seen me before and smiled..

The engineer across the room did the same to.. and my staff greated me with a smile.. later during the day, one of my staff commented "maam, you look great with the clothes you are wearing today.. pastel and feminine"..  It was the first time she saw me wearing one of my skirts.. hmm.. let’s call it "mini skirt".. a few inches above the knee but still not too short for a corporate outfit..  paired with a pin striped cream and pink long sleeve polo and a beige blazer and stilleto.. Goodluck!!! They just don’t know that the reason why I was wearing this super feminine outfit is because I haven’t done my laundry for two weeks due to busy sched.. Bottomline, I never had plans wearing such an outfit except maybe for some very important meeting or whatever.. but really, it’s not my thing to wear skirts since I started working in this area called Makati… (though lots of them wear micro minis and high stilletos) I don’t think it’s night to look at a lady rushing in the streets trying to catch one of those taxis or worse, pushing her way inside one of those MRT coaches going to and from the house.. hahaha.. mawawala talaga poise mo especially if you ride during peak times.. you will still get inside the coach even without taking a step.. why? coz people just push you inside.. hahaha.. one helluvan experience..

My day was one of those days that I remain silent sitting in my table for hours staring at my monitor and just take some time to go get some water or scan though some marketing books that I have in my side table.. I HAVE BEEN SUPER BUSY!!! that’s why :)

My task for today was to plan out on how I can maximize the use of our website as a marketing tool… I was going over it.. It’s all written in  a foreign language and my boss wants me to translate the whole website.. GOOOOODDDDLLLLLUUUUCCCKKKK!!!!!

Then of course I need to prepare the articles and materials for uploading so I decided to just paste the translations using Frontpage.. at least i could do some of the layout too.. our current website is just a "FLAT WHITE" site with a few flash show.. gosh, i suddenly miss Raymond and Jorge from my former workplace.. I usually make kulit to them to do some flash teasers, etc. and some of the guys form our sister company to do some programming for the feedbacks online.

Well, things changed, I moved on with my career and here I am, trying to learn and rfresh what I have learned in my HTML and Flash lessons.. I wanna try out Macromedia Dreamweaver so I downloaded it. Since it was a 30-day trial software that I got, I tried to find some cracks.. and wwhhhooollaa!!! the page that I found not just lead me to a lot of spyware installations and virus, these were the types who suddenyl open porn sites and those that can fill up your taskbar with more than 10 sites in less than a minute!!! :(  !@#!#%#^$*% IT’S EMBARRASSING!!!! and ANNOYING!! I really hated it.. not to mention that its embarassing to ask one of the tech guys to fix it coz like there were shortcuts of adultsites that suddenly appeared on my desktop!!! I really hated that idea but i can’t do anything but ask them. Otehrwise, I’d be more embarrassed when these pop-ups would suddenly appear in one of my client meetings using this laptop…

What’s the essence of this sharing? Read on:

1. It’s nice to change outfit once in while. You would look different (i mean better) than the usual.. heheheh…

2. Buy licensed softwares. The headache of trying to remove these pop-ups and fatal worms and viruses in your PC / Laptop while searching or installing cracks might cost you more than the software itself.

3. INSTALL anti-spyware, Ant-Virus and Pop-up blocker NOW. It’s no longer an added value, its a MUST!! A lot of really harmful viruses and nuisances are scattered everywhere.. just waiting for their chance to get into yousystem.. and for sure, you would really be disgusted if one of these nuisances would get to the heart of your system and eat up all your files or worse, would lead for system breakdown.. bottomline, CRASH!!!

Do I sound like I am a techie or someone who is an expert on struff like this? Let me tell you that I am not. It’s just that I experienced it myself and I am just sharing how I got rid of those things… Well, aas what they ususally say, a drop of caution is better than an ounce of cure.. did i get that phrase right? whatever… it sounds somethings like that… hehehe….

Gotta go to sleep.. early rise tomorrow.. a day of wornderful challenges.. a new day for a chance to be a lot better than today…. AJA!!! hahahahaha…..

LUCK or BLESSING…

Reflection: Things in this world are mean to happen. Circumstances are presented in certain situations for us to choose the life that we will live.. Destiny, though it is meant to happen still happens by choice..

A day in the office without a co-worker of mine nosing on me is a miracle! As usual, he is still nosing on me for a reason that I don’t consider valid.

I am happy today! I don’t want the thought of someone nosing on me ruin my day. Here’s why…

I just received my paycheck days back and I was budgeting it. Some money for my allowance, bills, savings, condo rental and of course I alloted an amount for my trip to Cebu this weekend. I AM GOING HOME!!! Yippeeeeeee!!! The thought of going home always gives me a good feeling of excitement and incomparable happiness…. Anyways, after all the budgeting, I ended up with a few thousand for my 15 days allowance.. Gosh… the dilemma of budgeting.. then I thought of some ways that I can cut my cost.. thing is, I can’t anymore.. especially not my Cebu trip…

Afternoon came… after a dozen phone calls for scheds and  after reading a bunch of emails, there goes that red colored text from a sender.. FROM MY BOSS ( i organize my emails by color so that it will be easier for me to identify which I should read first, which comes from the supplier, partner, or customer and of course from my boss). The title is about our client and when i clicked "enter" in my keyboard, whhhooollllllaaaaa!!!! He is sending me to Cebu for business!! When? On the day of my mom’s birthday.. the very day that i am scheduled to go back to Manila to work!!! Isn’t it  great to know that  my supposed vacation willbe for four days mon-thrsday then my boss would tell me that they are going to pay for  my airfare and travel expense including accomodation in one of Cebu’s five-star  hotel to meet with some business constituents? That is too much for a conincidence, don’t you think? Well, as far as I am concerned, it is the work of HIM up there.. <grin>

I am soooo happy because not only will I be able to save  my supposed budget for my trip home, I will have the chance to be with my Mom on her birthday especially that she is sick right now..

Nightime came and I attended on of this glitzy product launching of a printer company.. they adopted the STAR WARS concept.. I remembered a few years ago when the company i used to work for adopted the MATRIX concept for a database server launching.. . bottomline, both events spent roughly half million for a night’s event…

So there I was, lining up to register and dropped my calling card in the fish bowl for the raffles later..  I had a good conversation with one of the event organizers and learned how they do events here in Manila..  By the way, the event was held on one mf MAkati’s posh hotels with around 500 attendees..  Raffletime came..  My name was called.. I won a ***** JAckeT!!!

Wow! Am I lucky or blessed? I AM BLESSED..  Blessed with the people I have in my surroundings, blessed with immaterial  gifts and of course I feel that HE is taking care of me and watching me closely..

I capped the night at Starbucks with my staff… Talked to them not like  "the Boss" but as a friend, a co-worker sharing my experience and some of the lessons that I learned the hard way. We discussed about teamwork, strategy, confidentialities and openess in the organization… all part of a healthy working atmosphere…

Whew! Not I am home.. Rested in my bed hearing my cousin over the phone.. I cannot sleep… While I was reflecting, I thanked God for the wonderful blessings that HE has given me.. and of course, the chances of making / living my life better than before.. Though I tried to sleep, I just feel that I need to share my experience today to the people who read my corner.. my blog in this vast worldwide web that we call it.. I might not be a good wiriter and the flow of my thoughts might not be that clear but  I am writing this new post to share my experience…

RELFECTION: God sends His angels to turn things 360 degrees.. He might give us pain but He is still our Ultimate refuge.. and though sometimes we are hurt in the process / turning point, at the end, everything is planned to make the us the best of what we can be… HE IS THE DIVINE ARCHITECT and He puts everything in place …. at the right time..

YOU WILL RECEIVE A BODY…

You may like it or hate it, but it will be yours for the entire period you’re around.

YOU WILL LEARN LESSONS…

You are enrolled in a full-time informal school called life. Each day in this school you will have the opportunity to learn lessons. You may like the lessons or think them irrelevant and stupid.

THERE ARE NO MISTAKES, ONLY LESSONS…

Growth is a process of trial and error, experimentation. The "Failed" experiments are as much a part of the process as the experiment that ultimately "works".

A LESSON IS REPEATED UNTIL LEARNED…

A lesson will be presented to you in various forms until you have learned it. When you have learned it, you can then go on to the next lesson.

LEARNING LESSONS DOES NOT END…

There is no part of life that does not contain its lessons. If you are alive, there are lessons to be learned.

"THERE" IS NO BETTER THAN "HERE"…

When your "There" has become a "Here", you will simply obtain another "There" that will, again, look better than "Here".

OTHERS ARE MERELY MIRRORS OF YOU…

You cannot love or hate something about another person unless it reflects to you something you love or hate about yourself.

WHAT YOU MAKE OF YOUR LIFE IS UP TO YOU…

You have all the tools and resources you need. What you do with them is up to you. The choice is yours.

YOUR ANSWERS LIE INSIDE YOU…

The answers to life’s questions lie inside you. All you need to do is look, listen and trust.

YOU WILL FORGET ALL THIS…

Unless you consistently stay focused on the goals you have set for yourself, everything you’ve just read won’t mean a thing

Last week was one helluva typhoon/tsunami week for me that I didn’t notice that it was already a Friday until that day came.. Got lotsa things in the office to work on, a new staff that I have to orient and manage, projects here and there, a super demanding client that wants his project proposal to be done in a day (without thinking that he is trying to ask for a complete floor layout with all the specs for a high-rise/ 11-building commercial and residential area.. yeah, yeah, yeah. he is the client and I have to get things done.. he is THE CLIENT and we exist because of them.. but well, it was really exciting and challenging and I love the feeling that it gives me everytime I need to rush things to meet demands and plan things, etc. My kind of stuff…

Ooopppsss… But despite the whirlwind office works, I had the time to go out last Wednesday to this bar that features NINA!! Yes! Her music was so relaxing and gives me a flashback of the good old days when I was a lot younger and less wiser.. very vulnerable to heartache and heartbreak.. gosh! i forgot how it felt then but I still remember the stupid things I did for love.. hahahaha.. well, well, well.. I wouldn’t be me without those challenges..

Speaking of singers and concerts and feelings, Martin Nieverra and Patti Austin has this concert in Araneta last Friday. and yes, I was there too.. hehehehe.. well, this is one of the rare weeks that I get to go out more than once and I should tell you, they have a very good chemistry.. They sang really timeless songs, good music and good segways.. Despite the difference in race and language, Martin and Patti share things in common… THE PASSION FOR MUSIC.. the ZEST to make good melodies of what were once mere thoughts..

Am I melodramiatic! Nah, just expressed some of the thoughts and well, feedback from the audience..

I got one relaxing weekend though after that week-long tsunami at work. Thank God!!! <grin>

Whew! It’s a Monday!!!.. and I really had a good start.. My first meeting started at 8:00AM so can you imagine how early I woke up for me to be in the office at 6:00AM.. well, things went well though.. very promising if this project would push through.. all I need is more research, lotsa planning and hardwork.. TEAMWORK too..

Now, here I am, sitting in front of my PC, typing this blog and keeping my thoughts away from work for just an hour.. Lunchtime..

Ei, got to go and grab some sandwich for lunch! ’till next "blogtime lunchtime"..
